To automate, or not to automate - a review of floor planning software and services.
To automate, or not to automate - a review of floor planning software and services
Floor planning is a critical process in architectural and interior design, serving as the blueprint for how spaces are organized and utilized. It’s a fundamental step, particularly in office redesigns where functionality and efficiency are paramount and tenants are closely involved.
Traditionally, floor planning involves numerous touchpoints, including consultations, revisions, and approvals, making it labor-intensive and costly. For businesses looking to redesign office spaces, these delays can translate to significant financial and operational inefficiencies.
Because of this, more and more software alternatives have been entering this design phase lately. As CEO of laiout I get asked a lot about our key differences and in this overview I intend to make a rough comparison between the three options currently available for early stage floor planning.
Floor planning solutions
Advancements in technology have opened up new possibilities for revolutionizing the floor planning process. Here are three primary approaches to addressing this challenge:
Manual Approach Traditional manual methods, supported by software like AutoCAD, or newer versions like Hypar or Rayon, are still a great choice if you want to get into the nitty gritty details. These tools provide architects and designers with powerful capabilities to create detailed and precise layouts. However, they require a high level of expertise and more significant time investment. Advantages: Detailed design options for more customized projects. Disadvantages: Only suitable for experts that have gone through extensive training, as they don’t include constraints such as regulations and existing building restrictions. Alternatives: , Archicad, Canoa, testfit.io, Vectorworks
Tech-Enabled Architectural Services Companies like Pantheon and Qbiq represent a hybrid model, mixing manual work with in-house technology. They are not a software, but they are effectively a service model where their architects use technology to outcompete and replace traditional architectural services businesses. This model still relies on professional architects and they won't be able to show you the results instantly, but it reduces the time and effort required for floor planning to their clients, and often adds some tech enabled visualizations as additional output. Advantages: When you still want someone else to do the work for you, but just quicker than normally (from weeks to days). Disadvantages: You still rely on an external company and their turnaround time for understanding your need and all iterations will have to be done by them.
Fully Automated Solutions When it comes to fully automated solutions, laiout is market leading with a current output of 2-3 million m2 per month by its users. It’s a true AI powered software that allows users themselves to generate floor plans independently in seconds, eliminating the need for external intervention. This also means that laiout is the only software you can use in direct client engagement (i.e. workshop setting) to make decisions right away and avoid endless weeks of back and forth meetings to conclude on the floor plan designs.
laiout takes into account existing building constraints, architectural practice, and even some localized regulations. It gives you a detailed overview of not just the 2D design, but also in 3D, including AI rendered images. Additionally it provides a detailed cost and carbon (CO2) cost breakdown allowing you to make better informed and data-driven decisions earlier on. Advantages: Send over highly detailed accurate test fits in just minutes after you got in a request, or use it during a live workshop with your prospect. Get not just 2D/3D plans, but highly detailed statistics and data to make better informed decisions. Integrate auto generated personalized design options onto your website and listings. Disadvantages: Since it’s fully automated and has just seconds to provide you with test fits, it can have some details that you might want to change further. These you then manually smoothen out in a few minutes afterwards within laiout.
What is Best for You?
Choosing the right floor planning solution depends on your specific needs and priorities. If customization and design complexity are most important, traditional manual methods or tech-enabled services may work well. On the other hand, if speed, flexibility, and cost savings are your primary concerns, fully automated solutions like laiout provide a compelling alternative.
As technology continues to evolve, the floor planning process will undoubtedly become more accessible and efficient, allowing businesses to focus on what truly matters; creating spaces that inspire and support their teams.
